25,000 SmartSynch SmartMeters™ went ‘live’

June 30, as largest Canadian utility elevates Advanced Metering

Infrastructure initiative to new heights

JACKSON, Miss.–(EMWPresswire)–On June 30, for the first time since the birth of its Advanced Metering

Initiative (AMI) initiative in 2006, Hydro One began using energy

consumption data collected wirelessly from smart meters to calculate

monthly electricity bills for select customers throughout the province

of Ontario. For this critical next step, Hydro One selected more than

25,000 smart meters deployed between 2006 to 2008 by SmartSynch, a

global leader in public wireless smart metering technology.

SmartSynchs SmartMeters

measure how much and when electricity is consumed, and allow utilities

to retrieve the data in real-time via public wireless networks and the

Internet. This reliable, real-time information enables utilities to

better serve customers with precise billing accuracy, while dramatically

improving their ability to understand customer electricity usage and

prepare for periods of peak demand. SmartSynch has partnered with Rogers

Wireless, Canadas largest telecommunications

company, to provide the network connectivity for this initiative.

To date, Hydro One has deployed approximately 500,000 smart meters,

provided by a smart meter team consisting of multiple vendor partners.

In 2007, an international panel of judges recognized the utility for its

strategic vision by naming it winner of the Utility Planning Networks

2007 Metering Award in the category of Automated Meter Reading

Initiative.

SmartSynch has been one of our AMI vendor

partners from the beginning and were pleased

to have the company by our side for this exciting next phase of our AMI

initiative, said Rick Stevens, director,

development strategy, Hydro One. Its

innovations in the two-way delivery of smart meter data over public

wireless networks, coupled with the reliability and coverage capacity of

the Rogers Wireless network, have enabled its smart meters to

consistently perform at the highest levels since their deployment in

2006.

This is a major advanced metering milestone

for the utility industry in Canada, and Hydro Ones

strategic vision and commitment to customer service made it possible,

said Stephen Johnston, chief executive officer of SmartSynch. Were

delighted that SmartSynchs SmartMeters were

selected for this exciting next step, and look forward to supporting

Hydro One throughout this process to ensure its AMI objectives are

accomplished.

utilities, while enabling green-energy initiatives and delivering

significantly higher Returns on Resources.

Unlike proprietary, closed-architecture solutions, SmartSynchs

SmartMeters represent future-proof investments in technology. The
